To Croatia and Slovenia: vignette, Tauern and Karawanken
Last checked: 3 November 2026
Drivers heading from Germany or Austria to the Croatian coast or to Slovenia often take the A10 Tauern motorway via Salzburg and Villach and the Karawanken tunnel (A11). On this route you need the Austrian vignette plus two section tolls.
The route via Tauern and Karawanken
- A1 Walserberg to Salzburg Nord: vignette-free.
- A10 Tauern motorway: vignette required; on the special toll section you pay €15.00 instead of the vignette (car, single trip, as of 2026).
- A11 Karawanken motorway with the Karawanken tunnel: section toll €9.00 (car, single trip, as of 2026).
The alternative via the A9 Pyhrn
From the Linz or Passau area, the A9 Pyhrn motorway leads via Graz to the Slovenian border at Spielfeld. A vignette is needed here too; the Bosruck tunnel (€7.00) and the Gleinalm tunnel (€12.00) carry a section toll, €19.00 for both (car, as of 2026).
Slovenia has its own vignette
The Austrian vignette is valid only in Austria. For motorways and expressways in Slovenia you need the Slovenian e-vignette; in Croatia you pay the motorway toll at toll plazas.
Which vignette for the holiday?
For a return trip within ten days the 10-day vignette is enough, for a longer holiday the 2-month vignette. If you cross Austria in a single day, the 1-day vignette covers that day. More in the guide Which vignette do you need? and on all special toll sections in section tolls in Austria.
