When does the vignette start? The 18-day rule explained

You often hear about an 18-day waiting period for the Austrian digital vignette. It does not apply to every vignette or every purchase. Here is what the rule means and how an order with us works.

What is the 18-day rule?

When a consumer buys the 2-month or annual vignette online directly in the ASFINAG toll shop, it is only valid from the 18th day after purchase. The reason is the right of withdrawal: 14 days for distance contracts plus a few days for a withdrawal sent by post. Bought at a sales point, the digital vignette can be valid immediately if you choose.

Which vignettes are valid at once?

The 1-day and 10-day vignettes are not covered by the 18-day rule: they can be bought online with immediate validity. For an unplanned transit, one of these two is enough.

How does it work with us?

• You choose the start of validity in the calendar; the summary shows the exact end date before you buy.
• The 1-day and 10-day vignettes are usually registered within a few minutes of payment.
• The 2-month and annual vignettes are registered by hand, which may take longer. They are valid from the chosen day, at the earliest from registration. If you are driving on the same day, allow some time or choose a later start day.
• You receive the confirmation by e-mail and, if you wish, by SMS.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy the annual vignette for the new year in November?

A year's annual vignette is valid from 1 December of the previous year. With us you see before you buy until which 31 January the chosen vignette is valid.

Is the 10-day vignette valid for ten times 24 hours?

No. It is valid on the chosen calendar day and the following 9 calendar days, each until 23:59.
