Entering the licence plate for the vignette correctly

Last checked: 3 November 2026

The digital vignette is linked to the licence plate and the country of registration. Checks are made by cameras: if the entry does not match your plate exactly, the vignette counts as missing. Driving with a plate that is not correctly registered is an offence.

How to write the plate

  • The UK and all other countries except Austria and Germany: without hyphens, spaces or special characters, e.g. AB12CDE instead of AB12 CDE.
  • Austria (A) and Germany (D): with one hyphen after the district code, without coat of arms, sticker or spaces, e.g. W-12345A or M-AB123.
  • German electric vehicles: the "E" at the end is part of the plate, e.g. M-AB123E.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong country of registration: what counts is the country where the vehicle is registered, not your destination.
  • Hyphen in the wrong place on Austrian and German plates: HY-X1221 instead of H-YX1221 is a different plate.
  • Mixed-up characters: zero and O, one and I. Compare the entry in the summary with your plate before paying.

Entering it with us

The field accepts only capital letters and digits and checks the format for the chosen country. In the blue box on the left you choose the country of registration; the list shows the countries we can currently order for. Before payment, the system checks whether an order is already in progress for the plate.

Changing the plate later

For the annual vignette, the plate can be changed once after the start of validity, without giving a reason, for a fee of €18 if the registered keeper stays the same; for certain reasons, such as a new plate, it is always possible. With an interchangeable plate (Wechselkennzeichen), one digital vignette covers up to three vehicles.

After buying, you can check the registration free of charge on vignettenabfrage.at. You can order the vignette itself online from us.
