To Italy over the Brenner: vignette and section toll
Last checked: 3 November 2026
The quickest route from southern Germany to Italy runs via Kufstein, Innsbruck and the Brenner. On this route you need a vignette in Austria plus the Brenner section toll.
The route at a glance
- From the border at Kiefersfelden to Kufstein Süd (A12): vignette-free.
- From Kufstein Süd via Innsbruck (A12 Inntal motorway): vignette required.
- A13 Brenner motorway from Innsbruck to the border at the Brenner Pass: section toll instead of the vignette, €12.50 for a single trip by car (as of 2026).
Italy then has its own toll system with toll plazas; the Austrian vignette is not valid there.
Which vignette for the trip to Italy?
For a return trip within ten days, the 10-day vignette is enough. If you cross Austria only on the way out and return by another route, you can take a 1-day vignette for each transit day. For a longer holiday the 2-month vignette pays off. The guide Which vignette do you need? explains the differences.
Tips for the peak season
- In July and August the Brenner route is very busy; your vignette should be registered before you set off.
- Check the registration free of charge before you leave on vignettenabfrage.at.
- You pay the Brenner toll at the toll plaza or digitally in advance; it is not part of the vignette, see section tolls in Austria.
