Without a valid vignette: replacement toll and fines in Austria

Last checked: 3 November 2026

Anyone driving on an Austrian motorway or expressway without a valid vignette must pay a replacement toll (Ersatzmaut). Since 1 January 2026 it has been considerably higher than before.

How much is the replacement toll?

  • Cars and other vehicles up to 3.5 t: €200 (until the end of 2025: €120).
  • Motorcycles: €100.

The replacement toll must be paid within four weeks.

What if it is not paid?

If the replacement toll is not paid in time, the offence is reported. First comes a so-called Anonymverfügung of up to €365, then administrative proceedings with a fine from €300 to €3,000.

Does this apply to foreign vehicles?

Yes. Checks are made by cameras and toll inspectors regardless of the country of registration. Germany and Austria, for example, have an agreement under which fines from €25 can be enforced in the other country as well.

A wrong plate counts too

Driving a vehicle whose plate has not been registered correctly is also an offence: a vignette for a wrongly entered plate or country does not protect you. How to enter the plate correctly is explained in entering the plate correctly.
