Without a vignette: the vignette-free sections in Austria

Last checked: 3 November 2026

On a few short motorway and expressway sections in Austria you need no vignette. They lie mainly at the German border and make it easier to reach towns close to the border.

The vignette-free sections

  • A1 West Autobahn: Walserberg (border) – Salzburg Nord
  • A12 Inntal Autobahn: Kiefersfelden (border) – Kufstein Süd
  • A14 Rheintal/Walgau Autobahn: Hörbranz (border) – Hohenems
  • S5 Stockerauer Schnellstraße: Jettsdorf – Krems

Important: where the requirement starts again

The exemption applies only to exactly these sections. If you drive on, for example on the A1 beyond Salzburg Nord towards Linz or on the A12 from Kufstein Süd towards Innsbruck, you need a valid vignette. Anyone continuing without one must expect the replacement toll, see replacement toll and fines.

Not to be confused: the special toll sections

On the special toll sections (Brenner, Tauern, Karawanken, Arlberg, Pyhrn) you need no vignette either, but you pay a separate section toll there, see section tolls in Austria.

For the rest of your trip you can order the digital vignette online from us.
